It's on account of the hand...

I'm guessing the only person that will get the title of this post is my friend Miriam. So, I hope you read this one Miriam! Tuesday was not a good day for me and it was an especially traumatic day for Addy. First of all, she didn't take her usual morning nap. So I fed her lunch and was trying to get ready to go grocery shopping. Meanwhile, Addy was moseying around the bathroom keeping herself entertained. She had pulled a candle out of one of the cabinets of the bathroom earlier in the day and put it on the floor. If it was just a plain candle it would have been no big deal, but it was a candle with glass all the way around it. When she noticed the candle was sitting out, she picked it up and started carrying it around. I thought, "No big deal, she's just walking around with it on the carpet and she's keeping herself busy." The problem occurred the second she set foot in the bathroom. I didn't totally see what went down, but she dropped the candle while she was walking and part of it popped back up and hit her in the hand. Her hand started bleeding like mad! She had gotten cut at the base of her thumb, on the palm of her hand. The problem was a little flap of skin was covering where she got cut, so I couldn't tell how deep it was or if there was any glass in it. Nor did I want to lift that flap of skin to find out. I grabbed a bunch of tissues and started putting pressure on it. I then called Ryan in a panic (he was at school) to ask him what to do. He told me to call the girls I'm friends with in our complex and see if one of them could drive me to the ER. I ended up calling my friend Kiersten, who was kind enough to drive us to the ER. I felt very bad about this, because she and her daughter were just getting over being sick themselves. Anyhow, basically we ended up waiting around 2 hrs. before they took her back and cleaned up her cut. The nurse then said we'd have to wait another 1-2 hrs. before seeing a doctor. Luckily, Ryan was able to leave class a little early so that Kiersten and London could go home. We ended up waiting about another hour before she got to see a doctor. They had to strap her down with some type of contraption, so she wouldn't move (not her favorite!) and then numb her hand with a shot. (also not her favorite!) They examined the cut and said that there wasn't enough flesh in the area and it wasn't a deep enough cut for them to stitch up. They ended up cutting off the little piece of skin and wrapped her hand with about 40 layers of gauze! Seriously, I think the guy who wrapped it overdid it just a bit. Better safe than sorry though, I suppose. As is evident from the pictures below, it looks like she's ready to step in the ring with Mike Tyson! The bright side is, she was such a good sport about the whole situation. I was definitely more emotional about it than her. She is such a sweet and happy baby, that not much can really phase her. I'm also happy to report that the boxing glove was removed yesterday and she's now wearing a band-aid and a small amount of gauze on her hand.

This picture is both funny and sad to me. This is when we first got home from the hospital. She did a good job holding her cup and drinking, as long as we positioned the cup in her hand first.

I'm glad it wasn't any worse than it was! Poor thing. That picture of her holding her cup is so funny, but yes also sad.

I can't believe Addy still takes 2 naps! Hallie stopped around the time she turned one.

ooh, i'm so sorry!! having twice taken little ones to the ER I can vouch for the fact that it is a completely ridiculously long wait. I only hope those with heart attacks and severed limbs get quicker service.

The gauze glove is incredible! It makes me happy that it wasn't too bad of a cut. I can see how it's traumatic for the mom though!

Poor Addy!! I hope you took her to Target to pick out a prize!!

(I'm so so so kidding) My kids would say they deserve something for having to go through that!

Kelly,
Her reward was coming home and watching Sesame Street (her favorite show ever!) and eating chicken nuggets with ketchup on them. (which is another thing that she really enjoys.) That's the good thing about her still being little, she doesn't realize that she needs a reward for being brave!

I totally understand how tramatic that was for you! I remember our first ER run with Sophie and how scary it was for me. I'm so glad Addy is OK!

oh man, babies and ERs don't work out so well. When Sam had his Peanut alergy attacks it was the worst, but again he was a great sport. I feel for you though. There is nothing worse than seeing your baby in pain and knowing you can't do anything to stop it. You just have to sit by and watch them go through more pain before it will be alright. I suppose it does build character...for both of you. She's a cutie though.
